![]() As nearly all Australians know, immigration is a good thing for all sorts of reasons, but it has to be managed and controlled. Third, illegal immigration from Latin America is out of control. Twelve children every day! Why does that not horrify Americans? Why aren’t they demanding immediate action? It’s the guns: 12 children a day are killed in the US. That’s not just a function of the “defund the police” brigade. Then there’s crime, which has been soaring in US cities in recent years. Eventually, the benefits of spending will be eaten up by higher costs all round, including for consumers. Add to that Biden’s trillion-dollar unfunded spending on infrastructure and green initiatives – all of which sound worthy – and the result is obvious: rising prices and rising interest rates. It’s been caused, as elsewhere, by the massive increase in unfunded expenditure during the COVID-19 pandemic. It might be better if the American public focused on two or three things that really are going wrong, and find leaders who offer real solutions.įirst, there’s inflation. ![]() Ask the Republicans about the Democrats, and one invites a fusillade of abuse about the incompetence of the president, crime, inflation, mask mandates and so on. The problem is, this hatred and anger is two-sided. Seemingly mild-mannered people speak of their political opponents with all the toxicity of a feral tweet. They don’t just disagree with Republicans over these and other issues: they hate them. These seem legitimate issues, of course, but the passion they arouse among many Democrats is intense. Well, if you engage the Democratic interlocutor a bit longer, they will denounce the Roe v Wade decision returning abortion decisions to the states – although that was decided by the Supreme Court. They particularly focus their comments on the Januriot at the Capitol, and on the Republicans who say that Trump really won the 2020 presidential election, but it was stolen by the Democrats. So, the Democrats start off by telling me midterm elections are tough, but President Joe Biden is doing a good job and Donald Trump is a horror story. People there are Democrats by a substantial margin, whether they’re rich or poor or whatever their ethnicity may be. ![]() Being in New York, there’s not much love for Donald Trump. Politicians on both sides are not focusing on the issues that really matter to Americans.Īs someone with more than a passing interest in politics, I have been asking people what they think about the elections. This is deeply troubling, especially for those of us who still see the US as the guarantor of last resort of the security of the liberal democratic world. The once super-confident bastion of freedom and democracy, united by its sense of virtuous mission, is now consumed with doubt and acrimony. But what is striking is how America has changed. Midterm elections typically go against the incumbent in the White House, and that may be the case this time. Here in New York (where I’m attending a board meeting), a deeply divided United States is at screeching point ahead of the big day on Tuesday when voters flock to the polls to elect the House of Representatives and a third of the Senate. ![]()
