His hope was that Rockefeller Center – and Radio City Music Hall – would be a beacon of architectural and recreational success that could attract visitors, and investors. It’s estimated that by 1933, some 15 million Americans were unemployed and half the banks had failed.ĭespite the hardships, J.D Rockefeller was motivated to press on with building to create something beautiful from the rubble of the stock market crash, and began building in 1930. Originally a two-story private space in the eaves of Radio City, it was an office and entertaining area with a bedroom and bathroom bestowed upon theater impresario Samuel ‘Roxy’ Rothafel by the Rockefeller family in 1932. But to remove the connection to Samuel Rothafel, they renamed the dance troupe to the Rockettes. They did, however, keep the Roxyettes as a holiday “gift” to the audience before movie screenings. They believed that the time for the stage format show had passed and now the Depression-era public were more interested in movies. Due to poor returns they closed the RKO Roxy and turned the Radio City Music Hall into a movie theater on Jan 11, 1933. One week later when all the numbers were in, all hell would break loose in the RKO organization. ![]() Two nights later Roxy's new moving picture house, the RKO Roxy, opened on 7th Avenue. However, there’s more to perming than just the way it is done. You can alter the size of the rods so that you create sausage curls and tighter curls. There are also campus restricted SFTP gateways that users can use on campus networks. GPFS and NFS home directory filesystems are available through the SFTP gateways.įor security reasons, the gateways do not allow interactive access or allow SCP transfers. To facilitate SSH key forwarding, please consider using an SSH agent before initiating your SFTP connection. SSH keys should be used to access the SFTP gateways. There are many graphical clients available, such as WinSCP and Cyberduck, that users can download and install. You can use Cyberduck to log into that same account using FTP information you get from that host and transfer files up and transfer files back.Users should connect to in order to access the SFTP gateways and transfer files. So say that you've bought hosting services from a company and you've been using something like Dreamweaver or iWeb to host your website, but you just want to upload a bunch of different files there-maybe for storage or for backup. If you're having trouble connecting to an FTP server or transferring files, it's useful to talk to the person that controls the FTP server and make sure that you've got all of your fields filled in correctly and any special options set for that particular FTP server.įTP is also a great way to transfer files to a server that you control. You also want to go and make sure you email the person that you've just FTPed the files to because there is no automatic way for them to know that you've completed the upload. You can do that by putting a bunch of files in a folder, control clicking or right clicking on that folder, and using the compress option in Mac OS 10. Now some protocol when going and using FTP is usually you compress groups of files using say zip format. Sometimes you will have the ability to do that on a FTP server. There is some functionality in the menu items for creating new folders and things like that. So really, once you've used Cyberduck to connect to a server, it's all just about drag and drop. Select the transferred file in the Transfers window. Clicking the Open button will open a file after it has been transferred. To transfer it back down, I can go ahead and click on a file there and drag it out to the finder the same way. This is useful when you download a file but forgot where you put it 1. Close that, and I can see now it is up at the server. I'll go ahead and drag this text file up there. So here is a window with some files in it. Now, to get a file transferred up to the FTP server, it's…well, it's a Mac. You can also click the popup menu to go ahead and browse up as well. There's forward and back like you would see in a browser. Now, you can navigate up and down the directory structure using the controls here at the top. It lists the files that are in the directory that you been sent to in FTP. So once you have successfully logged into the server, you'll see that the window looks like this. You find out which one you're using from whatever server you're using. The default is standard FTP but there's also FTPS using SSL, and there's SFTP. Now you also have to choose the type of FTP you're using. Then you can type in your user name, also given to you by the owner of the server, and the password. Other times, it will be a series of numbers. Sometimes it will be a domain name like that. So for instance, you can type in the server name-like. You usually get this from the server's owner. When you click the Open Connection button, you can go ahead and enter in the information you need to connect to the server. Basically you get a window here, and there is a big "Open Connection" button in the upper left. Once you've installed it, it will look something like this. So you can get Cyberduck by going to cyberduck.ch and downloading it from there. There's one that is really popular called Cyberduck, that's free and open source. There's a lot of different programs that you can use to FTP on your Mac. ![]() ![]() So you can use it to say upload files to a client, if you're an artist, or you can download files from a server-presentations, artwork, whatever. You can use it to upload files to a server or download files from a server. And if you use your Mac for business, chances are you have to use FTP every once in awhile. So, FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. On today's episode let's learn how to use FTP with Cyberduck. Raspberry Pi isn't for everyone, but it could certainly benefit many smaller businesses in sectors such as digital signage and the software space.Wow, talk about long winded. The mini-computer is likely to have a big unintended impact in the SMB sector. "It's not a whole new paradigm but you do have to learn some new stuff - and you lose little processing power," says Upton. SMBs need some technical expertise from an internal IT manager, programmer or consultant - or even an MD - but once Raspberry Pi is integrated, the device has many uses and advantages over elements of existing IT. The low cost computer is extremely customisable and for many businesses trying it out makes sense. "The Pi is as powerful or more powerful than what is currently being used." "It is actually very suitable for industrial uses, especially for industrial control processes," he says. Upton thinks it won't be long before the device is widely used for generic industrial and control processes - including digital signage and collecting data in a factory environment. Whereas only big companies could address sectors such as digital signage previously, those buying Raspberry Pi tend to be small businesses. "If we look at sales of the number of units, we are seeing uptake in people buying 10, 100 and 1,000, indicating that they are selling the platform on, or individual businesses are using it," he says. "Raspberry Pi is cheap and the investment is the same as buying a keyboard," he says.Īccording to Upton, independent software vendors are doing well from buying Raspberry Pis in bulk from the exclusive resellers RS and Farnell and selling it on, particularly to digital signage companies. Eben Upton, a chip architect at Broadcom and a founder of the Raspberry Pi Foundation, says the device is particularly useful in certain functions such as programming displays for digital signage. Business applicationsīusinesses are also using Raspberry Pi for internal processes. Harrington has also created some Hamacci virtual private networks (VPNs) to secure the firm's source libraries so that remote developers can get secure and safe code access. "This leads to a better understanding of related utilities like headless operation, PuTTY and WinSCP (file transfer to Raspberry P) or bringing Linux inside a Windows domain." "Both of mine are running with 2+TB USB powered storage," he says. The firm's MD Nick Harrington has installed CrashPlan back up software and open source version control system Apache Subversion successfully on Raspberry Pi. ![]() Warwickshire based Ambay Software, which develops and supports legal applications on iOS and Android, is using two of the devices between two different offices. SMBs can also use Raspberry Pi as a dashboard for business intelligence. It can control processes or be deployed as a low cost development platform for both software developers and network engineers. The device can be used to work out whether computer components are working or to resolve connectivity problems. It can be used as a server to handle light traffic, such as that experienced by some SMBs, and programmers in small companies can use it as a basis for penetration testing of information security. Raspberry Pi thinks of itself as a software company which provides the hardware, enabling smaller players to get into business. The Raspberry Pi team partnered with Pete Lomas, MD of hardware design and manufacture company Norcott Technologies, and David Braben, co-author of BBC Micro game Elite, to form today's Raspberry Pi Foundation. Now powerful enough to provide multimedia, they were attractive to those who wouldn't be interested in a device purely for programming. In 2008, processors designed for mobile devices became more affordable. At the same time, computers had become too expensive for experimental programming. Back in 2006, the founders of Raspberry Pi had noticed that most young IT professionals had only done a little web design, in contrast to the boom in the skills seen in the 1990s. ![]() ![]() ![]() 2010 and pre-orders are being accepted now.
